Hello everyone and welcome to my campaign’s Facebook page. My name is William Compton and I am running for U.S. House seat in Kentucky’s 2nd congressional district. I wanted to make this quick video to talk briefly about this day; Juneteenth. This Juneteenth is particularly special because on June 17th President Joe Biden made Juneteenth a federally recognized holiday. As some of you may know, Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of the last slaves within the Confederacy. Sadly this did not mean the end of slavery in the United States, but after this day the rest of the states in this country were quick to follow. Juneteenth reminds us all of the bleak times in our past, but it is vital that we have this celebration to remind us of our country’s sins. As we all have heard frequently, “those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” I cannot overstate the importance of being mindful of our past mistakes and letting it drive us for change. I am not making this video to push any political ambitions that I might have, I think that would be in poor taste, I am making this video simply to commemorate this day of emancipation and celebration. I also wanted to make this video to say that, as I’m sure is painfully aware, we are not finished in this effort of fairness and unity. When African Americans, or any other minority, are vastly more likely to be killed by police officers than caucasians we have a problem. When Black individuals get longer prison sentences than their white counterparts for the same offense we have a problem. When minorities are given lackluster education and have less advancement opportunities we have a problem. We can and must do better; we must be better. I am confident that together we can bring about this much needed change in our country. Know that I, as well as all of my campaign staff, will be with you and do everything in our power to help you make this change. Let’s do this together!
